Photography on the Web- My Favorite Sites

I’m feeling uninspired today. The cold I’ve been trying to kick for the past couple of days is finally clearing up, but I’m still feeling bleary-headed, and having a hard time focusing for more than a few minutes. At least I think its the cold, could just be a general state of mind…

Anyway, rather than coming up with something original, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite places for photography related content on the web. These are sites I visit regularly for inspiration, tutorials, or just to check out awesome images. In no particular order, here they are:

1. David duChemin: David’s blog is my favorite. Period. He is an excellent and creative photographer, but mostly I visit for his perspective on creativity. He has a great series of instructional books that delve deeply into everything from composition to post-processing to earning a living as a creative photographer. Lastly he is one of the founders and editors of the Craft and Vision series of ebooks and the digital magazine PHOTOGRAPH.

2. Ocean Light Photography: I met photographer Phil Colla when I was working as a guide on an Antarctic cruise a few years ago. Though he doesn’t update his blog as often as I’d like him to, his irregular posts share beautiful images of everything from the night sky to underwater images. (There are some truly stunning images of ocean life and breaking waves on his site.) Take a look, it’s worth the visit.

3. Pro Nature Photographer: This website is full of information on making a living from outdoor photography and standard, if beautiful outdoor photography. There are numerous contributing writers and some provide better content than others, but overall it’s a great resource.

4. Strobist: The Strobist blog is well-known in photography circles and is probably the best resource available for free information on the creative use of off-camera flash. It’s definitely a photographer’s site, with lots of technical information and hints about portrait and location lighting.

5. 500px: This photo-sharing network has probably the highest caliber of images of any of its brethren on the web. A great place to browse for some really awesome work.

6. Glenn Bartley: When it comes to bird photography, there are very few photographers who can compete with Glenn Bartley. He is one of the very best and since he dedicates a lot of energy into one of my favorite parts of the world, the Neotropics, I make regular visits to his site and Facebook feed to appreciate his work. Unfortunately, he very rarely updates his blog.

7. The Flipboard Photography feed: If you have an ipad or iphone and aren’t already using Flipboard, you should be. It’s a great place to compile all the sites and information you enjoy from the web. Basically you customize the program to show you the content you like to see. Mine shows breaking news from the New York Times and NPR, Travel related posts, News from the world of professional cycling (the only sport I follow with dedication), and of course, Photography. The Photography feed on Flipboard is full of stuff I wouldn’t normally encounter, some strange, some amazing, and much is outside my niche of outdoor and adventure photography. A great place to see what is happening in everything from Fine Art to commercial photography.

So there you go. Those are 7 places on the interwebs that have awesome photo content. What are your favorites? Share them in the comments.
