Rarely does a perfect blue sky or a flat gray one render great landscapes. And sometimes the clouds themselves are enough to create the image. These three photos I made over the weekend. The first shot was made about 1030 pm when I was out hoping for the aurora to pop out. And though the lights didn’t make an appearance these high elevation clouds were a subject onto themselves. They were illuminated by the distant city lights and provide an interesting texture to what would otherwise be a rather bland image. The second to shots were made on Sunday about mid-day. Amy was peering out the window and pointed out the strange, wave-like clouds to me. I admired them for a second, but when she said, “those could make an interesting photo”, I agreed, put on my coat and stepped outside. Sometimes you need to have someone who will just give you a little push. Thanks Amy.

Clouds are unquestionably an important part of landscape photography.
