Denali Spring
Monday, May 7, 2007
Well it was a good weekend for bird photography in Denali Park, despite the less than perfect weather (snow, sleet, rain, wind...you name it).  The spring daylight had all the residents in a flirtatious mood.  Male Willow Ptarmigan were sitting in the tree tops feeding and calling and generally

Blogger Bio Blitz Second Round
Sunday, April 29, 2007
Well this is much delayed, but here is the second round of my bio blitz.  Today I’ll focus on the first round of fauna.  I am no entomologist, but I’ll give some descriptions in broad generalized terms (common name only, sorry).  And first and foremost is the the little critter above.  I knew it

Blogger Bio Blitz Day 1
Saturday, April 21, 2007
Today my goal was to give the broad picture of my Bio Blitz site.  I chose my backyard for this endeavor, a chunk of the grand boreal forest of which I am quite fond.  In the past week the snow has steadily melted back in the face of 60 degree temps and remains only in a few cool shady patches.

Easter Sunday in Denali
Sunday, April 8, 2007
I have never found churches much of a place to worship.  I’m not exactly religious, not even close actually, but I like to think of myself as spiritual and the Christian tradition holds a strong place in my heart.  As a result, Easter has always been an important day to me.  A day of hope, peace,

Spring Sprung and Bio Blitz
Saturday, April 7, 2007
Spring has finally made its appearance in interior Alaska.  The snow, as I write, is turning rapidly to water and running in streams down the driveway.  In Alaska we refer to this time of year as breakup. A reference, I believe, to the river ice breaking up and floating away. The term breakup

Shameless Self-promotion
Friday, March 30, 2007
I was pleased to check out the Shutterbug website yesterday to find one of my very own images gracing their front page.  My article “Rainforest and Rust” and accompanying photos, published in the April issue, has now been put up for all the world to see on the web.  I’m hoping this will generate

Boreal Owl
Tuesday, March 27, 2007
I had the rare and wonderful opportunity of spending today with an owl.  This morning at ABO I was distracted by someone walking into the office carrying a Boreal Owl wrapped in T-shirt.  Apparently it had smacked the side of their car as they were driving through the Goldstream Valley north of

Sonot Kkaazoot
Saturday, March 24, 2007
I feel like I’m on a mission to photograph all of Fairbanks’ late winter events. Today was the bizarrely named Sonot Kkaazoot ski race.  I have no idea what the history of the name is, but if anyone reading this knows, please enlighten me.  Several hundred skiers participate in the three races (a

Ice Park
Thursday, March 22, 2007
Ahhh it is great to be a kid...again.  Another annual event in Fairbanks is the World Ice Art Championships.  And the art, though interesting, and occasionally lovely is not nearly as much fun as the Ice Park, which though created for kids, is even better as an adult.

Open North American 2
Wednesday, March 21, 2007
Sunday was another bright and sunny day for the final day of the Open North American Championship sleddog race.  I situated myself along the trail and again attempted to catch the action with my camera.  I’m not sure I was as successful this time around.  I tried some of the same techniques but
